In one sentence: the same subject, different style words, completely different images. “A blue cat” is one picture; “a blue cat, watercolor painting” is another; “a blue cat, cyberpunk” is a third one entirely.

Why style words give you the best bang for your buck
A full prompt usually has four blocks: subject + style + light + composition. Style words give you the highest return — they set the whole mood of the image with just a few keywords.
Formula: Subject + style words + lighting + composition + quality words
- Subject — who/what: a cat, an ancient city, a cup of coffee
- Style words — this article: watercolor, photorealistic, pixel…
- Lighting — golden hour, rainy neon, studio light
- Composition — close-up, wide shot, centered
- Quality words — 8k, highly detailed, masterpiece

Combining styles: style × light × composition
Style sets the mood; the other two blocks shape atmosphere and viewing experience:
| Light | Effect | Composition | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| golden hour | warm golden glow | close-up | detail-heavy macro |
| rainy neon | wet cyberpunk vibe | wide shot | atmosphere & scale |
| studio light | clean product look | centered | poster-like balance |
| backlight | silhouette drama | low angle | big and imposing |
Recommended combo: subject + 1 style word + 1 light word + 1 composition word + quality words — five words strung together already puts you ahead of most beginners.
4 common mistakes and how to fix them
- Conflicting style words:
realistic AND animemakes the model pull in two directions. Keep one style word, optionally with a weighting phrase (“more anime”). - Garbled text: images with text (posters, packaging) often render nonsense characters. Describe the text separately (“a poster with a bold headline”), or fix it later in a photo editor.
- Too short: a prompt of just “a cat” produces a bland picture. Add light, composition, and quality words — even five words changes everything.
- “Photorealistic” without a lens: a realistic photo look benefits from lens terms (85mm / f/1.8); bare “hyperrealistic” can look plastic. Prefer lens words for photo styles.
